Important Tips for Running a Successful Business

Based on our observation of successful business owners, we have compiled the following points.  They are not listed by rank, since we believe all of them are important equally.
  • Surround yourself with positive people and keep negativity out of your life.  If you don't like what you are doing then start planning to change the business you are in.  "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life" ~Confucius
  • If you promise to do something, then make sure that you do it. The biggest compliment you can get from a client is when they commend you for a well done job  on time and on budget.
  • Be organised.  Take the time to organize those books on the shelf, get the check book balanced, clear the desk or tidy up the workshop.
"The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak"
  • Take pride in your appearance.  If you look good you will feel good and your business will benefit.
  • Compliment people sincerely- your family, your staff, your customers.  You can compliment someone for a job well done or on a nice characteristic you've noticed. If you can't do it in person, try to use another means like a card, a thoughtful email or a text message.
  • Treat everyone that walks in the door as a potential customer (even if they're trying to sell you something--one day they may be looking to buy something as well).
  • Don't worry if money is low. Worrying about the bills never got them paid any faster.  Instead, spend time implementing some simple marketing ideas and figuring out how to get customers through the door.
  • Be open to new and innovative ideas.  "Innovation requires that we remain open to ideas that are new, unfamiliar and may even seem impossible".
  • Be completely honest and ethical.  It is the age old saying... "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  Or in Confucianism... "Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself."  It's putting ethics on the forefront when doing business or working with clients.  It's acting honestly and with integrity in all transactions or developing relationships in social and professional settings so that mutual trust may be earned.  It's a simple handshake.
  • Take time to relax, unwind and recharge.
